There are a lot of rumors running riot when it comes to the subject of distance learning. People shy away from distance learning due to many reasons. The chiefest among them is the lack of recognition distance learning courses have by the industry.

Distance learning is also seen as a sign of mediocrity. Meritorious students study in the most expensive universities on scholarships. Bright students study in good colleges based on their scores. And even the poor ones get admission to good universities if they are bright students. So what about the mediocre? They take distance education?

Myth1
Online schools are fake and there for making moneyThis might be true for many universities, but not all. Before enrolling into an online university, prudence has it that you should check its credentials. Check your national government-sanctioned educational body to verify if the online school is legitimate.

Myth2
Learning is less and inefficientLearning depends for the most part on the learner. Online schools can give the same amount of interactivity that a regular school can. Most online schools use advanced video-conferencing technology to help achieve this. Students can ask questions online during a video-broadcasted lecture session. So where’s the difference?

Myth3
Employers don’t recognize distance educationIf you are from a good distance education institute, and your employer still does not recognize it, stop recognizing your employer! Good employers seek knowledge. They are more focused on what you can do. You might be from Harvard, but does that make you Einstein? By the way, Einstein was not from Harvard!

Should the elderly go back to school?

When you cross age sixty, you are old in body, but young in spirit. You have experience life. You understand the definition of life, and can explain it to others. While others still search for the definition of life, you are content, because you have all the answers.
Being elderly is being superior, and being wise. It is a time when the quest for knowledge increases. Not for increasing one’s wealth, but for increasing one’s understanding of the gift of life.

Senior citizenship is a time to relax and realize one’s true potential. It is also a time to make amends to one’s wishes and desires. One such wish may be education. As a young, or middle-age person, you would have loved to learn a particular subject. But lack of financial resources, support, or time could have hindered it. To fulfill that desire, it is never to late. And you can still go back to school at sixty.

Senior citizens want to feel accomplished. As they look back at a well-traveled road, they don’t want any regrets. If it is possible for them now to achieve it, this is best time to do so.

When you are a senior citizen, you are actually starting to live life. All these years you would not have known for what your worked. You would not have known when to stop. But age stopped you from going further. And now you have no choice, but to stop working, and start living. There’s no better time to start enjoying life than now.

Grandma Is Going Back To School

When it comes to education the saying that it is “never too late” is so true.  There are so many people out there who put furthering their education on hold to raise families, help out their parents, or a myriad of other reasons.  It may be in the back of their minds for years, the fact that they never finished their education.  Years go by, jobs come and go, all the time thinking what could have been.

Colleges have never made it so easy to go back to school.  While college is an expensive investment, no one can put a dollar amount on fulfilling a lifetime dream.  There are on-line colleges, where the adult student would not even have to go to a classroom.  There are lots of programs for people re-entering the world of higher education.  There are different degrees, there is lots of financial aid.  There are scholarships that are targeted for those going back to school after a long break.  Some colleges today even award college credit for your life experience.  You can get credit towards your degree from what you have been doing all along.

If the time is right for you, college is there for you.  Do some research.  You will find exactly the degree you want to achieve, along with the right way to achieve it.

Managing Time as an Adult Student

Remember when you were a kid and you wanted to grow up so badly? You wanted to drive, to make your own decisions and be your own person.

How little we all realized there would be work, relationship problems and the myriad of complexities which complicate and dull the adventure we thought we were on. Somewhere along the way it’s very easy to get sidetracked. That’s why so many adults find themselves taking classes these days, working toward degrees and other goals.

But how do you juggle studying, writing papers and the endless reading with children, work and a spouse? What if you are involved in some other activity as well? There go the last few free seconds you though you had.

The trick is so simple, and many people have employed it to great success throughout the ages. Compromise. That’s the great secret. A savvy student will know what to equate three credit hours of work to, in terms of time away from other things. Take into consideration the weight of the subject matter, and your individual level of experience and interest in the subject. Subtract that from your schedule the way it is before the work, and start there.

Some people can go without sleep. Most of us can not, and will turn into unmanageable zombies if we don’t get a full eight. Be sure to make school a priority amongst other things. It might mean less hanging out with friends, less time for hobbies or whatever seems enjoyable, but managing the time to get the grades will pay dividends.

And don’t forget; every extra class is weighted a little more. Two classes is often more than twice the work, and half the sanity.

Community Education Helps Adults Continue to Learn

Community education is more than free basket weaving classes.  It’s a comprehensive plan that engages people at all ages and helps make learning accessible to all people.  More than anything, community education helps adults continue to learn.  In order for this kind of learning philosophy to work, there have to be several things in place.

Lifelong learning has to be recognized as important and inevitable to the residents of a town or city.  We are always learning, regardless of our age.  Learning should be formal and informal to meet all stages and walks of life.  Often community education programs are sponsored by local colleges.  The formal university setting can offer some of its resources for more informal adult education classes.

Community education will not work in a community if the residents are not allowed to take ownership in it.  Instead of employing professors and certified teachers, community education classes are often taught by local experts in a particular field of study.  Classes may be anything from how to play guitar to how to write poetry.  The collective knowledge of the community is being shared to enrich the quality of life in that town.

Community education programs have to meet the demographic of the community.  If most of the population is working class, then a class on the Romantic poets isn’t good programming.  On the same note, diversity should also be reflected in the programming.  Adult learners need to be able to access classes that suit their interests and needs, and most people are trying to step outside if their current reality and expand with the community.  Therefore, foreign language classes, adult literacy classes, cooking classes, nature classes, various computer classes, woodworking and welding courses and fine arts like dance or theater are a good mixture for a good community education program.

Busy Adults Can Learn Through Listening

Just because you feel like you don’t have time to improve your education, doesn’t mean it can’t happen.  Today’s technology offers so many more ways to hit the books than in years past.  Busy adults can learn through listening.  Audio books are used in classrooms for all age groups, but a busy adult learner can easily pop one in the car stereo and get an education while taking a long drive.

Audio learning can be done just about anywhere.  Whether its in the car or while you’re cleaning the house, learning through listening is as convenient as an iPod.  Take a run and turn on a Spanish lesson.  Take a break and sunbathe while listening to a history lesson.  Many audio lectures can be downloaded for convenient use.  You may even have a job that allows you to listen to an audio lesson while you work.  Wherever you can freely listen, you can freely learn.

If you’ve decided you’d like to “read” classic literature, then you’re in luck with audio books.  Many people that love to read, but don’t have time to, will turn on a book in the car and listen.  As you improve your literary skills, you’ll be learning about history, culture, and politics as well as various literary styles. If your adult learning course requires rote memorization, audio learning can be a great tool.  An audio presentation that repeats formulas or dates in history will subtly imbed that information in your brain.

Adult Education is sometimes known as the continuing of education. Some adult that already have a career, sometimes go back to school to better themselves or to make more money. There are so many programs for adults to continue their education, depending on what state you live in. There isn’t a specific format or length to continuing education it can be a weekend, a week or months, depends on what it’s for. Usually adult educations is aimed for adults that already have a college degree, some of the adult educations classes are required for a job even mandatory and paid for by the Company they work for. Some of the adult education could be workshops, seminars, home study/online courses, conferences and hands on training. Sometimes continuing your education doesn’t mean you have to stay in the same field, it could mean a change all the way around. Some adult use education for professional development cause everyone wants to be really good at what they do and sometimes taking that extra step might get you a little extra money or a promotion. For most people the online courses are the way to go, only because it easier and you can do it from home or anywhere you can get internet, and go at your own pace. Online adult education is just like going to college just you don’t get the one on one with the teacher and you email and instant message the teacher and it could take a little longer. It’s one of the reasons why online schooling is so popular is that you can stay home and do it in the comforts of home or doing some at work. Even though the rate of adults of a certain age going back to school has dropped there are still some adult still willing to learn a thing or two.

Regardless of the reasons, many more adults are returning to school each year. Part of the reason may be because they simply need to brush up on their skills. A large factor for adults returning to school is also because jobsite’s have become high tech, and computer skills are in demand to run even the smallest of businesses. Sadly, some find that it is absolutely essential that they return to school in order to keep their present employment. Whatever the reasoning behind the decision, returning to school as an adult can be fun, exciting and even a way to show off the life skills you have obtained by being a bit more mature then the average student. If you have decided to start training for a whole new career, it can be looked upon as an adventure.

Resources for adults returning to school are just as abundant as those for younger students. There are grants, scholarships and all kinds of financial aide available to anyone of any age that wishes to increase their knowledge by returning to a college or trade school.
