Reading is the most effective habit to build your intelligence and memory. You might be born intelligent, but if you don’t have the habit of reading, you will remain an average person. Reading promotes imagination, information organization, information recall, and provides ingredients for imagination.

How does one imbibe the habit of reading? Are there any methodologies for people who have not read a single page in their lives? Yes there are. Here are some tips.

Start slowly and steadily. Read for five minutes every hour. Then stretch it to ten minutes. Set a time in a day for you to read information. Don’t read stuff that will not help you in any way. For example, things written on movie stars. These are entertaining, but a complete no-brainer.

When you travel, carry a book along. Whereever you go, be it on a vacation, or a family function, carry a book. You might not get time to read, but you are carrying your motive along with you. And one day you will be compelled to read the book and finish it.

Read a variety of information. Don’t just read romantic novels or sports biographies. Read about medicine, and engineering subjects. Get used to the demands of thought , reasoning, and logical representation that reading has on your brain. Once in a while read things you love to read. Read comics, and glossy magazines.

Start visiting libraries. You will find people of your interest. Don’t become too much of a bookworm. Over-reading and not doing anything can also be no fun.

Back-to-school time is portrayed in the media and in retail stores as a time for students to stock up and head back to the classroom. This type of situation might be ideal for students who are heading back to a brick-and-mortar classroom, but what about those students who are considered untraditional and heading back to the Internet classroom. Students heading back to the Internet classroom still have back-to-school needs, but they aren’t the traditional stock up on folders, pens and pencils and the latest fashions. These students have  needs that are a bit unconventional.

Here’s a look at some back-to-school tips for distance learning that will help you figure out what you need to do to prepare yourself for the upcoming school year.

Get Yourself Onto a Schedule

Distance learning or online-based classes require a lot of self-discipline. You are required to attend all classes on your own and you must motivate yourself to do your schoolwork while juggling other commitments.

To prepare yourself for the upcoming school year, you need to get yourself on a schedule and stick to it.  Schedules are the best way to ensure that all your schoolwork is done in a timely fashion and that you carve out a small amount of time each day that is reserved just for doing that work.

The best way to prepare for your back-to-school schedule is to sit down and physically write out a schedule so you can see what you need to do each day and how your time is blocked out. Try to integrate that schedule into your daily routine about two to three weeks before your classes actually start.

This will allow you to make sure you are already on and used to a schedule when your classes start.

Perform a Technical Run Through

For the distance learner, technology is the key to the outside world which is why a technical run through is part of the back to school essentials. A technical run through will allow you to make sure that everything is working properly and that you have everything you need to make your classroom experience enjoyable and easy to attend.

A technical run through will include trying out the virtual classroom to make sure you have all the necessary programing and software that you need. It will also include trying out all the ways you can save files and back-up data in case anything were to happen while you were doing your schoolwork.

A technical run through can also include installing anti-virus and anti-malware software as this will prevent anything bad happening to your computer or Internet which would cause you not to be able to attend classes.

Making It Happen

When college follows directly after high school, there are dorm rooms, roommates, down time, libraries and study groups.  Going back to college after a long sabbatical takes on a whole different meaning.  If you have decided to go back to school, you are not just signing up and buying a bright colored comforter for your dorm room.  Most people re-entering the world of higher education have been away for a while.  They have been raising families or attempting to climb the corporate ladder, only to learn they have to get that degree.

The good news is it is definitely attainable, and probably not as difficult as you think.  You can find a college that is right for you.  Decide what it is you want, and go get it.  There is financial aid available no matter when you decide to go back.  College is not cheap, but neither is raising a family and that would all be taken into consideration.  Maybe you can only take one class at a time.  That can be done as well.  Most community colleges have classes from morning until late at night.  Your classes can fit into your schedule.  You can take the kids to soccer practice or dance class, and then off to Psychology 101, pick the kids up, have some study time, etc.  Nobody said it would be the easiest thing you ever did, but it is definitely worth it.

Going Back to School as a Parent

School is a funny thing.  You start when you’re about 5 years old, and you go until you decide to stop.  Some people never quite get out of school (and have plenty of degrees and student loans to show for it), while some other people cannot get out of school quickly enough to please themselves.  While the choice of when to quit is yours, the choice to go back can be a very tricky one.  Consider the responsibilities and decisions you have to make as an adult, whether or not school is even on your radar.  Finishing up an undergraduate degree is quite a challenge later in life.

And that is saying nothing about going on to graduate school.  Consider what it’s like when you have kids.  You have to make sure their schedules are taken care of.  You have to make sure you’re making plenty of money to keep all your ends meeting each other.  And if you still have time to sleep (and occasionally see your spouse), do you really want to add another difficult responsibility to the mix?  That is a question that only you can answer for yourself.  For many people, the GMAT class online they take is a warning that grad school would simply be too much of a burden for them.

Think about it.  There are only 24 hours in a day.  Do you have what it takes to bend your schedule even further than you already have?  If you do, you are one seriously intrepid individual.  Most people would crack under that kind of pressure.  Keep in mind that going to grad school after you’ve been in the work force for awhile is not anywhere near the same as going to college straight out of high school.  Consider that the inertia of “going to school” has long passed.  It takes an awful lot of conscious effort now.

It’s Never Too Late to Go Back to College

Many people tend to carry around this belief that once you graduate from high school, you either get a job, join the army, or go to college. After you’ve graduated from college, pursued a career in the military, or chosen a civilian profession, you move on in life, never to return to a higher learning institution. Some people think that if you didn’t make that timely decision to head to college straight out of high school, you have no chance of ever going to college.

Of course, this is a very wrong perception. You are in control of your future and the choices you make. There are hundreds of instances of people in their 70s, 80s and even 90s taking community college classes and receiving degrees. They are pursuing a life long dream. They’re proof that there’s no age limit for heading to college.

If you have had the desire to go to college and receive a degree in a particular field of study, nothing is stopping you from achieving that dream. In fact, you can do just about anything you want. So, if you want to graduate from college at the age of 50 and work in the car insurance industry, you have that choice. If you want to get an engineering degree, you have plenty of options.

In fact, many students who went to college fresh out of high school and returned many years later say the experience was much better the second time around. They were older, but also wiser.
